TONS OF WATER.

.. WHAT THE STORM MEANS. . 1050 TONS TO THE ACRE. - ■ The rainstorm ceased yesterday, showers coming infrequently in an overcast, clay, which was the fourth sunless day experienced in succession in New Plymouth. After a sharp shower last night the sky cleared, and a fine inoonJit night followed. Yesterday's rainfall registration at Pukekura Park observatory station showed a further fall of .58 inches, making a total of Kl.oSin. since Monday. The countryside lias had a good soaking, and as the weight of an inch of rainfall over an acre would be about 100 tons, it will be seen that since Monday the farmers' broad acres have had a very liberal treatment in this respect, the total being approximately 1050 tons of water to the acre.

The householder's quarter-acre lot, by reason of being generally more sheltered than country areas, would not receive the full force of the downpour, but allowing a small percentage, it may be estimated that the total on the small town section would be 210 tons of water. Last night's weather forecast says: "Present indications are for strong north-west to south-west winds; unsettled and squally weather, with colder conditions soon; heavy showers are probable in many .parts, especially in eastern and southernmost districts; barometer unsteady, but rising shortly in the south."
