GISBORNE'S nARBOR. The moult' of the Turanganui RiverI—Gisborne's 1 —Gisborne's harbor—ls gradually but surely becoming silted up. Each year sees tho channel a little more abbreviated, and f. llttls shallower, probably caused by a diminishing rainfall, due to the denudation of the back country s mantle of natural rain-Inducing forest. .Ttac was when steamers such as tho Mnwhera. Penguin, and (much later! tire Arahura used to be able to steam boldly up the stream and berth alongside the quay just below tho Kaiti Bridge, but while the district has grown and prospered, the river has become so bad that it is fee-od tint, if the silting up goes on at the present rate the stream will be no use to shipping at all. For some years past it h.is only been possible for a light-draft tender to

"work" the river; now even that craft can only work the river at high tide. in tho meantime the Harbor Board is still deliberating over the construction of a new harbor. • SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
