PRICE OF COAL.
PROFITEERIXG ALLEGED. "OUTRAGEOUSLY HIGH PRICES." By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In the House of Representatives today, Mr. J. McCombs (Lyttelton) drew the attention of the Minister in charge of the Board of Trade to a statement made by the secretary of the Coal-mine Owners' Association (Mr. Pryor), that as a result of stoppages by the miners there had been 50,333 tons' loss of output, and £26,785 lost in wages, in which he showed that the total wages paid to miners, truckers, and others average only fls per ton. Would, Mr. McCombs asked, the Board of Trade have enquiries made to find out who was profiteering, seeing that this coal was being sold at from £4 to £6 per ton, as the figures supplied by Mr. Pryor for the following mines show the total wages for miners, truckers, and others work out at only' (is 8d per tpn at Nightcaps, Cs 4d at Pukemiro, 7s Id at Taratu, 8s 9d at the Westport Co. mines, and lis 3d at Blackball He asked, would tilie Minister have a special enquiry made regarding the outrageously high prices which were being charged for these coals.
