CORRESPONDENCE.
BOROUGH LOANS AND TRAMWAYS. 1 - j (To the Editor.) Sir,—The attitude of the Westown Progressive League towards the linking up of the suburbs by a tramway service seems to be of a one sided nature, aiTd a very selfls"h independent spirit—we must have what we want ur nothing until the ratepayers and the Council will give us what we ask for. OTey ask the ratepayers to turn down all three proposals; no consideration for Vogeltown at all, quite unconcerned as lo what the wishes of that suburb may be; Taking into consideration the cost of the two systems of transit, and the revenue to bo derived from tie Bervice, any thinking ratepayer must come to the conclusion that the railless trolley system is tfie one of the two. That would appeal to the fre\ thinking person at the present time. Under present conditions give the railless troliey system support, and, failing that, the next "hope would be in the electri cor petrol 'buses. If the loans are turned down, as the Westown people desire, the Council will be faced with tha Carrying oh ol the 'bus or 'buses. If two large vehicles were provided to carry, say, 85 passengers, one for eacti suburb, and the little one as a stand-by or for sßort trips, no doubt this would serve BBth suburbs for iflany years, and would pay We!!. This opens the question as to whether an eTectrlc 'bus can be procured to carry 35 passengers and develop a far greater speed on the grade hero than the present 'bus, whlcS for Speetf has proved to be a failure. When In Cbrlstchurch recently, I found the Christclsurch Tramway Board hod been running a large electric 'bus between SockburS tram teTmlnus Had Islington, but. for some reason had taken Jt on and put on a large White petrol 'bus in Its place. Mfty have flat country there, but here we have heavy grades on the roads to bothi Westown and Vogeltown, and without far greater power can bo developed from the storage battery 'buses than we get at present, then why not, petrol driven 'bu3es. Every ratepayer should weigh the loan proposals well in his mind, everyone should cast his vote, and trust to the Council to do the right thing for the benefit of the town. Let each Councillor sink any personal feeling In the matter and act with a clear conscience ftir the benefit of the general public. It's for the public to decide now whether it is to b» railless trains or 'busses.—-I am, etc., VOGELTOWN RESIDENT.
