Mr. F. W. Wreenwood, 8.A., instructor of agriculture under the Canterbury Education Board, has been appointed an instructor in agriculture under the Department of Agriculture. A number of ratepayers recently met Mr. W. R. Wright regarding his proposed retirement . from the Egmont County, of which he is chairman. As a result of this urgent request he has agreed to stand again. Major-General Boris Semenon-Merlin, a Russian officer who served under Admiral Koltehak against the Bolsheviks, and who held the post of AssistantGovernor of Eastern Siberia until the revolutionaries established their authority over the region, arrived in Auckland by the Riverina on Monday (says the Herald). He is accompanied by his wife. General and Mrs. SemenonMerlin had to leave Siberia six months ago, and since then have lived in Japan and Java. They intend to reside in New Zealand.

A resident of Auckland, who has earlied out much scientific research and invention, Mr. John Clement Cuff, died this week. Mr. Cuff, who was horn at Bristol in ISSI, was educated at Bristol Grammar School, on leaving which he became a pupil of the late Lord Kelvin at the Glasgow University. Ultimately he became Lord Kelvin's assistant in scientific research, and their joint efforts produced the instrument that made submarine telegraphy possible as a commercial proposition.
