WAVERLEY-WAITOITOI ANNUAL MEETING. RACING IN THE WET. DEPREDATION WINS THE CUP. (BY "MOTUHOA,") Shocking weather prevailed yesterday on the occasion of the Waver'oy-Waitotara annual meeting at Wanganui, but the Club was lucky In two respects. Firstly, in getting the crowd rhere before the rain came on, and secondly, in having such a splendid wet weather course as that of Wanganul to race on. The attendance was very large, the special train from New Plymouth being well patronised, while hundreds .motored from Pulmefrston,, Marton, Waverlcy, (Partca, and Hawera. The course stood tie test well, as the times recorded show.
Despite the wretched weather everything passed off smoothly. Mr. Alt. Morse w»r. in splendid form at the barrier, his starting being iiuiokcr and better than recently seen at Wanganui. The lotaiisator liar died £41,(153. as against £.T.,G02 last year. The Cup fell to the New Plymouth hois' 1 Depredation, who rewarded Mr. P.. Barlow Willi an overdue, but popular win. Penr-dation was always in a good position, and .boat Tame Fox, who was backed as if he was a nionl, pointless.
"'he public commenced well. All Cerise being a strong order in the first race, and outstaying the opposition in the run home. Listr.ivcl was allowed to pay a false price in the Brewer ITandioap, repeating his end to end victory of the last Wanganui meetly. Adnivra ran a good race considering that, die has not been up long, but Crucclle cou'.i not 1.0 her best owing to having developed -.: lei." Ngakitmii /returned his party a fine diridend. West riding him cleverly, and talcing tre race off Diamond Nap In the Inst Inndred yards Mattock, who was favorite, was slow to leave, the post, and did net get a sight of the Hrst two fences. The pace, was on Ml the way, and when tlic faioiite got clear he had too much leeway to make up to have any chance.
Piro r ir o ran a good race in the Wilson .takes, but weight stopped lira at the finish Prodigal drew , m outside position on the bad bend, and had no show. Amber Tips had be<-n beating Rose Queen on the Wanganul tracks and won well. Belie Noir was always handy and was close up third. She will see a better day.
Wanganiii punters wont nap on Tame Fox, hut the imported horse was pulled about too much in the first four furlongs, and did well 10 get second place at the end. Depredation who always runs well at Wanganui, won nicely. Alteration was vigorously handled by Chaplin, and struggled into third positon. Only four lined up for the Flying. Bif Tush drew No. 1. and was never headed off! Following are the results of the racinij:— MORTON MEMORIAL MAIDEX RACE. Of 120 sovs. Seven furlongs. T. Long's b. f. The chief handicap race of the day wan won by Bagdad, who on several occasions, Lis proved his ability to carry a lightweight to victory In the mud, but be could only will narrowly from Red Ribbon. The open six furlong event was won by Rouen, who hud shown good form on the opening day, and to-day foundAno difficult? in defeating the lot opposed tiff him. The Champion Plato proved to be a good thing for Amythas, who revelled In the heavj going and won very easily at the finish. Tl:e withdrawal of Meroniu from the Jure, nile Stakes made the star two-year-oid «veiit a good thing for Rational, and the Haweraowned gelding won as lie liked.
The racing began with the Roseneuh Handlcap, a maiden two-year-old event* The .vaiuigsters did not find the slippery going to their liking, and several of tile first" day performers did not show their best form When I hey all settled down for a run to tile pom Backsreesl! looked to have a great jhince but Dissertation settled him at the stand' and over the hist bit Martial Dawn put in a run which landed her a w'.nner bv' :i head Anomaly was fourth. When doing her preliminary, Red Band crashed through the railj and was Injured.
Walton, Amherine, Warrawee, and Sumo. var, were solidly backed in tl, B Tararua H-ui. dlcap. Malaga got away smartly and was soon joined by Samovar. Before reachln» the bend, Samovar went to tie front and Connie; Stroke ran up behind Malag,,. Counter Stroke .viinovar, and .Malaga were first, into tho straight, and at the distance Malaga wis •■till holding her position. Prom here Miss li-iid eeirc fast. She got up n time, and b'\n Malaga by a head. Strategy was „ fai, tn.rd, and Counter Stroke was fourth. The next race was a simple affair fur Mcriahera, who went »o t.ie front' soon aftel '-'c Held settled down, and .ins never troubled He won by live lengths from Master Boris who was four lengths ahead of Falstaff Otane fell at tho first, fence, and Jloitciii' koif rapped the second fence hard enr.iHi u take the steaim out of him.
A flue Held of milcrs was saddled up fo, the Peace Handicap. Backers again mad.i Glen Canny favorite, but 80-Peep, Ro.vil and Imaribbon, all carried a lot of money Bonnie Heather and Dainty Step began best and Right and Left soon joined them. These were tho leaders to the bend, whero Right and Left showed signs of dying out, and Royal Stag gave indications of coming away DaintJ Step was collared at il-,. distance, and here Red Hlhhon got out of the ruck and commenced a great run. She looked like winning, but Bagdad, who goes well in the mud heat her home by a neck. Dainty Step was a good third.
The scratching of Mcrmin took most ~1 the interest out of tho Juvenile Stakes, there, being a general desire to see the Moriiiln— Rational battle f<,u ß lu again. Rational and n.nning Hit wore both heavily backed. Rational got out of tie barrier very well and was never headed. Winning Hit made a big effort to overtake him in the straight, but had no chance, and was four lengths to the hart at lie finish. T oa Taua was another three lengths away third, and Kick Off was
The Champion Plate, though run at a time when the course was very cut up, was well .•(...tested, hut in ,I,e ei.d, that good sort Aninliiis.hcnr the opposition polnlless The field went out of the straight and turned into the hack stretch well bunched, hut Just before reaching the seven furlong post, Arrowsniitl- was rushed to the front. The speedy imported horse uulckly pit a break on the held, and rounding Ihe bend to the. straight ho was a long way clear. He still had a ehanee at Ihe uoltom of the straight, hut he 'lid not eoniinue his run, and Karo, who had made up a lot of ground, was going so well that she looked likely io win hy a good margin. However, at the distance, Amvthas went ihrnucH the field fast, and with a 'magnifleent nnishini: run, cut down Karo and won hy three lengths.
The Ituahine Handicap was run in the rain, and the horses were difficult to pick up until they reached tie distance. Here Eisteddfod was in front, and Kipllnie and Martian Miss were well placed, and Ngata. on the outer, was anions; the likely ones. Eisteddfod could not he headed, but Ngata got up in time to cut Martian Miss out of second monev. Kipling was fourth.
The final event, the N'ainai Handicap, found a somewhat financially distressed public going for all sorts of chances of a recovery. Miss Gold (tallied a lot of support through dolnfi an attractive preliminary on the much cut about track, and the field took some time to find Its feet. Over the business end of the journey, Houen took charge and Asti!!ime put In a claim. The finish saw Rouen win well from the Treutham mare, with Early bawn third, ami Blackmail fourth.
