TARANAKI'S PORT.
CALL FOR MAIL STEAMERS? (By Wire.—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. Mr. S. O. Smith (Taranaki) asked the I'ostmaster-tleneral whether, in view of the fact, that the port of New Plymouth is now recognised and used aft a lirst ami last port of call for oceangoing boats trading between New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and America, the Government will, when the question of subsidising mail steamers i,s under review, favorably consider making New Plymouth the first and last port of call for mail steamers trading between New Zealand and Australia, seeing that New Plymouth in the nearest port of call to Australia.
The Ifon. J. Q. Coates replied: "There is no present intention of subsidising steamers for the conveyance of mails between New Zealand and Australia. The hon. member's request Will have consideration in the event of such a proposal being under rfevicw."
