BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held for the purpose of considering an application from the Farmers' Co-operative Organisation Society to use the premises iu Broadway, known as the Empire Stables, as a hide and shin store. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan) presided. Cr. Cameron moved that a license be issued as desired. This was seconded by Cr. Thompson. An amendment: "That no license be issued for any premises in Broadway to be used as a hide and skin stores," was moved by Cr. Newton and seconded by the Mayor. The amendment was defeated by four votes to two. Crs. Cameron, Thompson, Lawson, and Hunter voted against it, and Cr. Newton and the Mayor for it. Ors. Stewart, Young and Walsh, being interested parties, were unable to vote. The motion was then put to the meeting and carried.

GENERAL. The proficiency examinations at the Stratford School will be conducted on Friday, October 29. In the matter of outdoor sports, such as cricket and swimming, Stratford is lagging very far behind many towns with a much smaller population. A few cricket and swimming enthusiasts have been endeavouring to revive interest in these • sports, but up to the present their efforts have not met with much success. Eltham has both a Cricket Club and Swimming Club, and if a further effort was made it should be possible to at least keep pace with Eltham in this respect.

The funeral of the late Mrs, H. E. Lawrence took place at the Kopuatama Cemetery this afternoon. A lengthy cortege followed the hearse to the cemetery, and a very Targe number of beautiful wreaths were sent by friends. The service at the graveside wliieh was conducted by the Rev. J. W. McKenzie was very impressive.

The deatli occurred early this morning of Mr. Phillip Crago Clemow, cTdest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Clemow, of Opunake Road, at the early age of 2u years. The late Mr. Clemow left New Zealand with the .Main Body of the Expeditionary Forces, and served through the Gallipot! and afterwards in France, On his return to New Zealand he resumed his position with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., and remained with that firm until early this year, when he took up land in the Toko district. He was married to Miss Dorothy Hine, daughter of Mr. J. B. Hine a few months ago. Shortly after his marriage he developed a serious illness, resultant from his service abroad, and despite every attention, slowly sank, and for some time past had been in a critical condition. Very great sympathy is felt with his young wife and the members or the Cfemow family in their sad bereavement. Oct. 20.

A public meeting will be held in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday evening next, at 8 o'clock to discuss the question of the railway leases and the petition asking for the freehold of same to be sold. The Mayor (Mr. J. AY. McMillan) will preside . Dr. Steven, medical superintendent of the Stratford Hospital, reported to-night that the condition of Miss Annie McDonald, who was seriously injured in an accident on Sunday afternoon, can be regarded as satisfactory, but she will be unable to leave the hospital for several weeks.

A telegraph chess match has been arranged between the Egmont Club and the Masterton Chess Club, and will take place on Saturday, October ;!oth, from 7 till 11 p.m. on each evening. It is intended to have twelve competitors on each side, an& the CE.M.S. Club, Eltham, lias agreed to send four players. This will be the fjrst telegraph chess match to be played in Stratford, and members of the Egmont Club will be permitted to watch while the games are in progress. At the annual meeting of the Stratford Croquet Club, held yesterday afteri noon, feeling reference was made to the late Mrs. Lawrence, who had been a I member of the committee and one of the most active players, and a motion of condolence with the relatives was carried in silence. *
