London reports that Lord Stradbroke, | tin; Governor-fleet of Victoria has been gazetted K.C.M.G. A cable from London states (hat General Townsend. of Kut fame, has announced his retirement from the army. Mr. C. F. IS. Pen-in. dispenser at the \'ew Plymouth hospital, has recovered from his recent illness and is at present on holiday prior to resuming duty. Mr. .T. I). Trotter, of Woodlands, has been asked lo contest the Awarua seat at the next election. He is considering the matter. The sudden death occurred at Dnnedin on Monday of Mr. John Curry. The late Mr. Curry, who was 44 years of age, served in the' South African War. As a musician he was well-known. For many years lie was a flugel horn player in tho'Kaikorai Hand, and won the flngcl horn championship at baud contests. When the Trcntham tamp Band was formed he became a member of the organisation, with which lie continued unI til the band broke up.
Sir Ralph Champneys Williams, Iv.C.M.G., who, in company with his niece, intends tourinj; New Zealand, is spending a quiet holiday at Nelson. Betides having been appointed head of the Intelligence Department of the Bcehuanaland Expedition in ISS4-85, he has held positions as British Consular Oiiicer, South African Republic, in ISS7, and later first British Agent to the South African Republic; Colonial Treasurer of Gibraltar, in ISflO; Colonial Secretary of Barbados; Resident Commissioner of Bechuanuland fro! eel orate; Governor of Windward Islands in IOOG-fl; and Governor of Newfoundland from 1900-13.
The meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Hoard yesterday was the last prior to the county elections, when six representatives of the Taranaki. Egmont, Clifton and Inglewood County Councils will be elected Members took the opportunity of making some valedictory remarks, and Mr. Capper also intimated that he would probably not seek re-election to the Board. He also expressed his thanks to the chairman and members of the Board for the courtesy shown to him. Tliu chairman expressed the hope that Mr. Capper would seek re-election, remarking that his retirement would be a distinct loss to the Board. Mr. C. Andrews also intimated that he would not he seeking re-election. Ali the county representatives paid a tribute to the work done by the chairman in the interests of the hospital, and .the uniform courtesy he always .showed to members, the hope being expressed that lie would continue to preside over the Board. Mr. Halcombe, in the course of his remarks, stated that people could hardly realise the work done by the town members, particularly the chairman and Mr. Hill. Mr. Fraser, in acknowledging the remarks, stressed the assistance he had always had from members ftf the Board and paid a tribute to the. zealous work performed by the secretary and staff.
