ALLEGED THEFT.
BY TOTALISATOR HANDS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Oct. 19. In the Police Court, Richard Quinn and James Albert North were charged witli having, at the Avondale races on October 2, stolen £4 belonging to Harry Ilayr, part owner of the totalisator. _ The evidence was that Quinn was a ticket-seller at a 10s window and North was stamper for Quinn. On the day in question Quinn was asked if his cash was correct and he replied "Yes." lie denied having given a man no change from a £5 note tendered in payment for two 10s tickets. North was sitting close to Quinn when the latter was questioned, but did not speak. Detective-Sergeant Ward gave evidence of having obtained two 10s tickets from North. He tendered a five pound note and waited for change. None was tendered, and witness walked away. A trap wag set for Quinn, owing to complaints. Quinn subsequently stated that a person who tendered him a "fiver" walked away without the change. He (Quinn) paid £2 to his mate, the stamper, and handed the five pound note over to Everton, the pay-out clerk.' They had to pay all shortages, and he paid £4 over to his mate to hold. North admitted having got £4 from Quinn. He said he paid £2 back to Quinn. Detective Quinn corroborated the evidence of Detective Ward. William Mander deposed to having complained to a detective that on the second day of the races lie paid £1 to Quinn for a 10s ticket, and got no change. The accused reserved their defence and were committed for trial. Bail was allowed in one surety for £25 each.
