BOXING.

THE SPORT IN TARANAKI. 1 TOURNAMENTS ARRANGED. Lovers of boxing are being well catered for by the three Taranakl Associations, and during the next six weeks will have the. opportunity of witnessing three first-class tournaments. Next Thursday, tho Hawera Sports and Pastimes Club, v»hieh has already run several* very successful tournaments this year, is holding a tournament in the Winter Show buildings, when a capital programme will be submitted. The principal event is tho professional contest between the noted lightweights, Jack Keenan and Alf. Broomwich, who will box 15 three-minute rounds for a purse of 100 sovs. A great contest Is assured, as Broomich, who recently defeated Cub Venn, Is confident of success as is his opponent, 'he special bouts should also be attractive. Laurie Wills, the popular Hawera welter, will be seen in action against G. Browu, the Auckland champion, and can confidently be relied upon to give a good account of himself. Duggan, the Normanby lightweight, who has made such a favorable impression by his clean and straight hitting, is up against a solid pro. position in the clever Thomas, of Wanganui, whilst the other bouts that complete the programme are between Firzsimmons (Matapu) v. Corliss (Wanganui), and James (Now flynfoulh) v. Howe (Wanganui). All aro billed to box six two-minute funds. The secretary (Mr. Paterson) and his committee are leaving no stone unturned to make the tournament a success, and their efforts deserve to bo rewarded by a bumper house. The Taranaki Boxing Association, which has shown itself a live body, havwg already held three tournaments and staged four professional contests during its short existence, is folding another twon iglus' tournament in the Empire Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 10th and 11th. The Association is catering for amateurs by holding provincial champifflwh'.p events in each of the six classes, and with the number of amateurs that are now taking on tho sport throughout Taranaki, there should ho no lack of entries. If the talent can be unearthed there seems no reason why Taranaki as. province should not again be represented at the Dominion championship tournaments. However, this tournament will serve to give an idea of the prospective talent in the province, and for the stowing made by those that have already appeared in public, there should he nc lack of competitors of science. The secretary (Mr. Clarke) is endeavouring to get into touch with all amateurs and teachers of the art In Taranaki, who should bear in mind that nominations close on October '27. For the second night, in addition vo the finals, a professional contest for a purse of 120 sovs. will be staged between two well-known middleweights, Laurie Cadman and Mike Dempsey. This is the most ambitious bout the Association has yet arranged, and no doubt tl-eir enterprise will be appreciated by local sports giving a bumper house. During the show in November, the Stratford Sports and Pastimes Club, who staged the Cann-Facnory fight a few weeks ago with ourstanding success, aro holding a tournament, and arc arranging to match two noted professionals, as well as to hold several special amateur bouts. Lovers of the manly art—and, judging \y the striking successes of recent boxing tournaments, they are numerous—will he pleased to learn thai. Sir. f. M. Winiki has opened classes In New Plymouth and Inglewood. llis Jong professional experience (late of the Waokfriars Club.
