DISTRICT NEWS.
STANLEY ROAD., (From' Our Own Correspondent.) A very successful hard-up dance was held in the school on Wednesday night, about 40 couples being present. Tho following ladles and gentlemen appeared In hard-up costume: —Miss Klvell and Miss Mona Baskin, Miss A. Mischeski, Miss B. Mischeslri, Miss Mary Baskin, Misses E. Breei. 1 , Maclver (3), Phillips (2), Mr. Phillips, Mrs. Cliff Phillips, Mr. P. Mischeski, Mr. T. Breen, and Messrs, Barleyman (2). Miss L. Kivell won the gents' prize, and Miss Mona Baskin the ladles'. Dancing was indulged' in until 2 o'clock, the imusic being supplied by Mrs. Blanchi's orchestra, which left nothing to be desired. Extras were supplied by Miss Kerrlsk, Miss Klvell, Miss Bolton and Mr. Barlyeman. The duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Mr. Chard and Mr. Barleyman, DURHAM ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The extraordinarily fine winter, and so far no one In this district can recall a similar one, has not proved of much beneflt as regards the pastures, which are very backward as yet. The raiUt yield Is In no way commensurate with the number of cows milked. Of late years it has been very noticeable that graßS does not "come nway" until abaut the middle of October, and top-dressed land does not show any marked difference. Fawners should take serious note of the value of breakwind.! (and tl:e creek and river banks prov.ile Ideal places for such), as observation will show that land as yet in the log and slump stage is further advanced than that open to tho wind, practically showing a benefit from the wind and frost.
The Maketawa Dairy Co. has erected a most substantial skim milk stand, which is a very great improvement on tho old arrangement. Tho new stand Is built of reinforced concrete and corrugated iron, and is destined to hold an automatic skim milk weighing machine, which, I understand, will be placed into position in the course of a; week or so. At present suppliers have a temporary arrangement for measuring out the akfm, and have to go to the bother of lifting their cans from the ground to their carts. Needless to say great curiosity is evinced ns to the length of tirnie this has to be suffered. An epidemic of whooping cough and other infantile complaints is going the rounds of the district.
RATAPIKO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Ti:e final euchre lournnment of the Sports Club was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday last, when twelve tables took part In the competition. Great excitement prevailed, as the club was presenting a gold medal to the lady and gentleman who had gained the highest number of points during the season, and there were not five points between the ten highest men. Euchre ceased at 10 p.m., and tbe floor was then cleared for dancing, whilst the committee were having a busy time finding the winners of the evening and also adding up the points for the seuon, Mr. M. Kuklinski won the men's prize, and Mrs. Fred Mlddlemiss the ladies', Miss Mary Burkett and Ben Dodunskl receiving the prizes of lesser value. Mr. A. E. Grigg then announced Miss L. Middlemiss as winner of the ladies' gold medal, and Mr. Jack Moratti and, Mr. Dave Potrotz both equal (40 points) for the men. The committee decided on a play-off, and after a very hard-fought game Mr. .Tack Moratti was declared wiuner by one point. During the evening Mr. Fred Mlddlemiss conducted a guessing competition, adding considerably to to the Club's funds, and the thanks of the club are due to Mrs. Mlddlemiss, aenr., who donated the prize; Mr. Potrotz being the lucky winner. * i Mr. and Mrs. Jack Eagar, who have recently ! moved to Knimata, were given a send-off by their friends In this district, and presented with a handsome silver epergne. The school examinations have just taken place, and we congratulate Mrs. Wilson on the splendid results obtained. Mr. Len Heat.ly met with an accident last week, a cow biting two of his fingers almost through. Miss Lena Morby is vlsiriug her sister, Mrs. Grigg. Miss Myrtle Deacon Is the guest of l*er sister, Mrs. J. Wells. Some little time ago the Ratapiko boys issued a challenge to Knimata for a. game of football. The challenge being duly accepted, Thursday, October 7th was fixed for the match to take place In Mr. Jack Wells' paddock. It onust be quite ten years since such an event took pluce in Ratapiko, and the promoters are to be congratulated on reviving tiie good old game of Rugby in our district. Shortly after 12 o'clock the people started •to gather on the football field, and by 1.30 p.m., the time fixed for starting, a goodly number of spectators had arrived to "barrack" for their respective teams. The Raima t a boys were given a hearty welcome, and were led on to the field by their worthy captain, Barney Burkhard. They wore red jerseys, and looked a fine body of athletes as they filed past t)ie grandstand. Ratapiko then took the field, and were captained by .Tack Corbett, of "All Black" fame. They were also given three hearty cheers as they made their appearance, and indeed looked a tough proposition for Kaimata, several old-time reps, being amongst their number. The teams were represented by the following:—Kaimata: Full back, Bungage; three-quarters, Davis, Dobson, Burwell; five-eighths. Burwell, Clarke; half, Tliorby; forwards, i\ Reesby, B. Burkhard. Gibson, Burkhard, Cartwright, Dobson, W. Bracegirdle, Itienner. Ratapiko: Full back, Roy Clough; three-quarters, L. Simpson, G. Siiaipson, Fail-brother; five-eighths, E. Lovcridge, .T, Wells; half, Ken. Riely; forwards, Osboure. J. Corlett, J. Corbett, Roche, Kukllnskl, Mlddlemlßs, Dravltzki, F. Lawrence. A draw was a very fair decision on the day's play. Ratapiko are mostly old-t!jne players, and were much better in tl:e first spell than jn the second. With a little more training l they will keep Kaimata very busy In the return match, which will be played at Kaimata, in Mr. Ivlenner's paddock, on Thursday next, the 14th inst.
