MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Education Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs. P. J. H. White (chairman), A. Lees, 11. Trimble, It. .T. Dcare, H. Eaves, and F. Hoskin. Cum"berworth, assistant, Tariki; Miss Nutting, pupil teacher, Inglewood. The selection committee made the following recommendations regarding appointments to vacancies:—Okoke, sole teacher, Miss Constance Musker; Hurford, sole teacher, Miss F. 0. Freer; Kins:, sole teacher, Miss E. M. Freer; Waitaanga, Mr. L. Bolson; Whareroa, Miss A. Ritchie; Stanley, head teacher, Miss E. Sartor!; Mangatokl, assistant, re-advertise; Central, 9th assistant, re-advertise at end of year. Miss Long was appointed trainee at the Hawera Technical High School. ARCHITECT'S REPORT. The architect (Mr. C. H. Moore) reported:— Hawera Technical.—Good progress is being made. Hawera Technical Hostel.—We lave also been able to ma a start with the foundations of the new dormitories and other work in connection with the reinstating of the main building. Stratford Technical High School.—The contractors, Messrs. Julian and Sun, have made a start with the foundations. They have nine men on at present, and more mien will be put on as soon as the work is far enough advanced. Mr. F. W. S;indford las been appointed clerk of works. Manaia New School.—A contract has been let for the supply of shingle, and urgent application made for cement. We have also secured steel. Within a fortnight, If cement is obtainable, we hope to be able to make a start.

Mimi Additions.—The new class room will ho completed this weel;. Rowan Additions—This additional class room will also he fiinshed this week. Whilst in this part 1 propose to erect partitions and other work at "Mahoe and Riverlea, and also curry out the washl ouse conveniences at these places, including Cardiff. In respect, to the Cardiff residence, I would recommend that application ho made for another room. This matter was brought up during my recent visit to Cardiff.

Workshop.—The jniner.v for Milni awl Rowan has recently been completed. All the doors for the Unworn Technical High School are also out in tl?e flat, a considerable a mount of school furniture has been manufactured. Wo are practically hung up in regard to tl'e ordinary dual desks, as we arc out of suitable timber and find it very difficult to obtain

General—Tenders have been invited for the erection of teachers' residences at Ohura and Xgaere. Plans have been completed and applications made for additions to the Vngeltown school, and remodelling and additions to the Punjlio school. The Department have made a grant for additions only, and a further application was made to include the remodelling.

TRUANCY. The truant officer (Mr. O. Pascoe) reported : During the past ten weeks I have sent out 186 irregular attendance notices to parents of children attending primary schools. Night ('lasses.—The attendance at Uieso elapses is nor. satisfactory, and prosecution has to be re.sr.itod to. Four parents have been summoned and fined In Stratford, and a number of eases are pending in New Plymouth. M ATNTEN AN CD GRANTS. The Board decided to support the North Canterbury Board in its views regarding rho K'ctssiiy for an increase in the maintenance grant on account of the increasing cost of labor and material. Regarding partitions, they eirpressed the opinion that where classes increase in attendance, or when it becomes necessary for two teachers to teach in one j|»Gin through an Increase In attendance, or through the adoption of the principle of smaller classes, a partition, permanent or temporary, should l)t' erected where possible, and the Department should bear the whole cost of same. A copy of the resolution Is to be forwarded to the Department. THE HAWERA HOSTEL. A report was received from Messrs. Trimble, Lees and Eaves regarding a conference held with the Advisory Committee of the Technical High School on the matter of control of the hostel. The following recommendations were made at. the meeting That Cue control of the hostel and grounds be placed in the hands of the Advisorj Committee as local representative of the Board. That the Board pay into , a special hank account on behalf of the committee all fees received lor boarding and any other money available for expenditure on the hostel and grounds, which fund shall be expended by the committeo on the ordinary expenses of running the hostel and on such Improvement's ro the grounds as may he deemed necessary, provided that the committee shall be responsible to tic Education Board for the proper expenditure of the fund, and pro- j \ided further that any deficiency in the fund! })e made up by the committee, either by I public subscriptions or such other means as \ may be thought advisable. That the fees for: boarding bo the same as at the Boys' High! School at New Plymouth. That the work of the renovation and construction of the hostel! should be pushed on with all despatch. j It was decided that the report be forwarded to the Advisory Committee for any further recommendations. MISCELLANEOUS. The chairman reported on the position in connection with the Rowan School Committee, and stated thar in response to representations he nun the settlers to discuss the matter. Subsequently, a meeting of householders convened by the la.e chairman (Mr. Doyle) recommend'Mt the following be appointed a committee: Messrs, S. Hftflard,, E. Lines, T. Maindonnld, A. JO. Jackson, and A. K. After taking into consideration the nece*- ' sity for a school building at Moeroa, the fact that a site had been 'offered free by ono .of the settlers, and that the settlers will cart the material from Omona and erect the building, the Board decided to ask the Department tor a grant to cover the cost of the | material. , Application is to be made to the depart- j ment for grants for shelter shed at West End f and for enlarging and improving Cardiff resi- 1 dence. Turoto Road settlers are to be Informed that provided a suitable building Is supplied by them the Board will provide the necessary furniture and apparatus tor a school, and pay rent. As soon as the attendance warranted, application would be made for a new building. The question of a school being opened in the Rang! district (Ohura) was referred to the organising teacher, Mr. Insull, for a report. • < Tre Stratford Committee wrote asking the Board to undertake the work of building a girl's shelter shed—The Board decided that as the architect has a great deal of work lit hand the committee be nsked to have the work done under Mr. .Moore's supervision.
