LABORERS' WAGES.
APPLICATION FOP. INCREASE. UP TO £1 A DAY. The New Plymouth branch of the General Laborers' Industrial Union is moving in the matter o£ securing a fresh award of conditions and wages. Replying to a letter from the Borough Council suggesting that the, Union's representatives should meet the Council, the secretary (Mr. F. J. Lyons) has written stating that the Union had decided it would be better in the interests of both parties to cite the Council in the ordinary way. At last night's meeting of the Council, the. general manager reported that the Council had been served with a citation and a substantial increase wa.s asked for. Contracting firms also were affected, but he thought that as far as the Council was concerned it would be better for them to apply to the Conciliation Council for a separate agreement. The borough's system of working was different to that of the ordinary contractor. In reply to a councillor, Mr. Bellringer said that the proposed award asked for £1 per day for tar work, and from sixteen to eighteen shillings for general laborers. The question of appointing assessors was referred to the Labor Disputes Committee.
