London advises that a mail was despatched for New Zealand on September 30 by the Remuera, via Panama. To-day is the anniversary of the beginning of the Boer War, hostilities commencing on October 11, 1899. ! According to the Christchurch Spectator, the Central Dairy Company made a net profit of £11,710 last year on a capital of £13,000. The Napier Borough Council is considering the question of the appointment of a general manager, and is writing to Plymouth Borough Council for information. The Governor-General has authorised a section of land at Waverley, which was set aside for the purpose of a post and telegraph office, to be used as a site for the erection of a memorial hall. A largely attended meeting at Eltham on Friday night decided to form a branch of the Loyal Citizens' League and to support the Government to the fullest extent in upholding law and order and preventing the spread of direct action methods. At the Haymarket, New Plymouth, (Messrs. Newton King, Ltd) on Saturday, pigs were sold as follows:—Slips, 20s to 225; good slips, 20s, 32s to 335; small stores, 34s to 35s fid; sow in pig, £5 10s; boar, £3 7s 6d. Some fine fish have been lifted by anglers from the rivers in the Inglewood district. On Saturday Mr. C. Sealright secured two fine brown trout from the Ngatoro river, near the power house, weighing 5J and 4$ lbs respectively, whilst earlier in the week a six-pounder was lifted from the Ngatoronui. The ratepayers of Winganui are feeling very sore over the erratic service of the local tramways, which were stopped altogether for some time recently. They have addressed the following questions to the Mayor:—(i) Why, our own engine having been overhauled and put in running order, and one of the Napier engines having been placed in commission, there are still these irritating interruptions in the service? (2) What, if anything, is now wrong with the Wanganui engine? (3) What, if anything, is wrong with the Napier engine, and why, if it ran satisfactorily in Napier, is it not doing the same here after overhaul and re-erection? (4) If the engines are not faulty, then are the stoppages due to incapacity, neglect, or lack of organising ability on the part of any person or persons connected with the Tramway Department? (o) In short, why are we being subjected to this intolerable inconvenience ? The Napier Harbor Board is the latest local body in the market with a 5J per cent, loan, and those in authority are unanimous in their opinion that * very special inducements are being held out, amongst which we notice that provision lias been made whereby investors can have their debentures inscribed and the period of the issue may, at the option of applicants, be for 10, 20 or 3d years.
