The Pall Mall Gazette, commenting on "Nationalisation, an object lesson from Australia," says: "Queensland dabbled in every public ■ industry which seemed to promise revenue, with the consequence that taxation has been raised to an un-heard-of height, and the Treasury left in the direst state of emptiness. Nationalisation as applied to Queensland turned gold into lead, and the- undertakings whioh yielded profit in private hands have become synonymous with a deficit. when exploited by public authority." Commenting on Mr. Theodore's statement that the Government would appropriate the dividends due in the State of outside investors, the Gazette says: Theodore is reduced to the naked metliod3 of a highwayman."
