PERSONAL.

Mr. H. C. Davies, well-known in New Plymouth, has passed the examination for surveyors. In the Legislative Council yesterday, Sir William Hall-Jones, whose term had expired, but whose re-appointmont was formerly announced, was sworn in.

The death has occurred at St. Albans of a formerly well-known resident of the Ashburton County, Mr. James Wright Sawle', in his eighty-sixth year. A native of Cornwall, Mr. Sawle emigrated to Australia, in his youth. Some fortyfive years ago ha crossed to New Zealand, settling first at Greendale, and later near Ealing, where he took up land. 'Recently Mr. Sawle retired to Christchurch.
