CANTERBURY GRAIN MARKET. Christchurch, Oct. 5. There is no change in the oat position. Offers from farmers are non-existent and apparently all the oats are in merchants' hands. Home quotations would seem to provide little hope of an outlet there, even with a substantial reduction in freightage, but recent quotations are for River Plate oats, a soft oat of a much inferior variety to our b.ird sample, and generally regarded as as of quite 4s a quarter less value. However, as transit rates are at present prohibitive, this possible market is scarcely worth considering. Wheat under the Government regulations is for October worth the following: Tuscan, 7s 6df Hunter's, 7s 9d; pearl, Bs. A proportion of the washed-out areas will, it is considered, have been resown, as freedom from winds has prevented the ground from caking. The liveliest thing in the grain and seed market is white clover. A local firm was in receipt of advice from London, conveying a firm offer of 335s Gd for No, 1 grade, and of 320s for No. 2, the latter of which comprises the average sample. These prices are c.i-f. London. Freight and other charges would represent about £ls per ton, so that offer indicates a strong market. There is very little white clover now in farmers' hands, however, Italian ryegrass is being inquired for, but cocksfoot and cowgrass are devoid of any movement.
