The Stratford hydro-electric plant was ; rendered out of action for about threequarters of an hour yesterday morning lis a result of mischief having been committed by some unknown persons. It was found that the gate of the main tunnel at the dam had been closed and aiso that some tools and timber had been thrown into the water. The Borough Council has decided to prosecute any persons found in the hydro paddock without a permit, and also to impound all cattle found straying in the grounds. .'■ ■ "I The rival petitions in connection with the Stratford railway leases are reported to be both receiving good support. In the event of the two. petitions being presented to Parliament, it will be interesting to see what action is taken by the Government. Mr. R. Masters. M.P., was in Stratford for the week-end. He will return to Wellington to-morrow (Tuesday) morning. A good number of fishing licenses have bren issued by the Stratford Acclimatisation Society, and some good catches nro reported. Mr. E. F. Harkness, secretary of the Society, reports that two sportsman who took out licenses on Saturday afternoon, returned in an hour's time with three good fish of fib., 41b-, and 31b., having caught them in the Patea River since receiving theiij licenses. A good supply of coal arrived in Stratford to-day, and should considerably help in meeting the present demand. Stratford, however, has very little to complain about as regards coal supplies, for even during the times when other parts of the Dominion have suffered an acute (shortage, none of the local dealers have been right out of supplies.
