THE COAL FAMINE.

OHEISTCHUKCH SURELY ENDING. THREAT OF UNEMPLOYMENT* Br Meirraph.—Press Association. Chriatehurch, Last Night. Within the next fortnight a great number of people now employed in (Shristchurch will be out of work unless fresh coal supplies arrive meanwhile, and there i 3 little prospect of such relief. This is the opinion of Mr. Jenkin (president of the Canterbury Industrial Association), after making special inquiries regarding coal supplies. The answers he received were practically all to the same effect, namely, that stocks were perilously low and that a serious crisis is rapidly approaching. Mr. Jenkin stated that there were approximately ten days' supply of coal in Ohristchurch for industrial purposes, and those establishments not connected With the Lake Coleridge power supply would have no option but to put off many of their employees at the end of that time, failing the arrival of coal. AUCKLAND DEADLOCK, MORE WORKERS UNEMPLOYED. Auckland, Last Night. Auckland is still without trams or gas, and many are unemployed. One of the principal confectioners' firms has had to give notice to one hundred hands, and other manufacturing firms are cutting down the staffs. Neither the tramway or the gas services will resume this week. '
