THE MEAT DEAL.
~ 7^ REMOVAL OF THE GLUT. BETTER PRICES NEXT SEASON.' The important cable published yesftrday morning announcing that vWeys have purchased the whole of the Imperial Government stocks of meat stored in England, Australia, and New Zealand, and also those in transit, a rouaed considerable interest amongst producers, (or it means the near approach of the removal of the meat glut, and consequent ly better prices nest season. ' Discussing the cable with a Daily News representative last night, Mr. H. B. Gray (manager of the Taranaki farmers' Meat Co.) said that though the message was not very full, it could .Oily be assumed that such a large deal had not been made before a market had been found, and he thought it most probable that Vesteys had secured an outlet on the Continent. The purchase is report* ed to involve a million quarters of meat, and it is thought that only a Continental market could, at the present tine'-deal with such a surplus. "The effect of this sale, as far as New Zealand is'toncerned," said Mr. Gray, in reply to a ques< tion, "will be that the storei in the United Kingdom will be cleared—in other words, the glut will disappear—and therefore there will be better price* for next season's produce." ?-'■'■ Mr. Gray mentioned that the quantity of meat now in store at th& Smart Road works is about 60,000 freight carcases, and this, should be removed in two shipments. The Mamari will load at New Plymouth this month after the'discharge of her direct shipments from England, and another Home liner is expected here in November. It is proposed to commence killing for the new season during December.
