DEATH IN A LOCK-UP. Bjr Teleiraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Taihape, October 2. Stephen Sapsford, a middle-aged butcher, died in the Taihape lock-up last night. He had been ill for some days, developed a peculiar demeanour, and was taken care of by the police. He leaves a widow and two children. j A CANOEING DISASTER. Wellington, October 2. The police have been notified that a schoolboy, James Frederick Victor Holmes, capsized in a canoe a week ago, and evidently was washed to sea. The boy was on a holiday to Blenheim. He was warned not to go out in the canoe, but ventured out. Friends heard a scream | and saw him floundering in the surf beside the canoe. The crew, of the steamer Wairau heard cries and saw the boy's hands disappearing. A search and dragging were fruitless. A CORONER'S RIDER, Wellington, Oct. 2. j In a rider to the verdict on the death of Robert FHewood, who died of Bright's disease, accelerated by a fall from a football special car, Mr. P. S. Evans, the Coroner, urged that the consideration and gazetting of tramways regulations should be taken in hand without delay.
