WEST END SCHOOL.
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The ordinary meeting of the West End School Committee was held last night, when Mr. J. 8. S. Medley, deputy chairman, presided. It was resolved to recommend the appointment of Messrs. J. Hamilton and Jas. Lobb as members of the committee to fill vacancies caused by tho resignations of Messrs. W. W. Thomson and A. K. Smart. The headmaster (Mr. D. P. Evans) reported that there were now 524 pupils on the roll, as compared with 516 at the commencement of the quarter, the average percentage of attendance being 89.6 per cent. On four occasions the weekly average had been over 480, and if this could he maintained, the school would be placed on a higher grade. , The inspectors' report was read and considered to bo one of the most satisfactory yet received by the school. The inspectors' tag stated that the sooner a new building was provided for this rising district the better, as the present buildings and grounds were quite unsuitable for the requirements. The secretary was instructed to write the head teachers and staff congratulating them on the splendid results achieved. It was also resolved to thank Mr. Avery for a handsome donation of 28 books. It was 1 resolved to again draw the attention of tho Board of Education to the tag on the inspectors' report, and to urge that steps he taken to procure a new site as soon as possible. Gratification was expressed at the efforts now being made to obtain it site on Belt Road. It was also resolved to hold a gala day In conjunction with the Kawaroa Park Committee towards the end of November.
