TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Amberley r..ces to-day. Wanganui on Thursday next. The Eclipse Stakes will be run this day week. Winter Wind will not be produced at Wanganui. Another unlikely starter is the Bullstrained Whiz Bang. .Mannish appears to bo "the jroods" in. the Hurdles at Ambcrlry. Wanganui punters, boots and all, will be on Warrawee next week. Owing to developing a splint Arrowsmith will be an absentee from VVanganul. Old Kurapai, now trained at Awapuni by Chas. Mill™, will be a runner at Otaki. That promising sprinter Mustard Pot has been fired and lurnec] out. A bowed tendon is the trouble. If they bad; Will Oakland in the Wattle Handicap at Amberley, it will only be a case of what'll be second. Last year the Wanganui J.C. was disappointed over the Gloaming—Desert Gold match. This year the meeting between tlio two A's has also fallen through. Pakaraka, who showed pace on the flat at Martoii, is to race nrer hurdles in future. He is a member of Jim Coyle's team. A puff par writer in a contemporary considers that the Wanganui J.C. "deserves tho splendid entries received for the spring meeting, etc." Why'l Surely not because six of the sixteen races carded are only worth £lsOl Consequent on Arrowsmilh's leg trouble P. Christmas has abandoned the Wanganui trip. Arrowsmith, Kllrusli and Cunter Attack were scratched on Tuesday. A correspondent inquires: "Who !s the Double King of Taranaki." That question is easily .lust ask Bill Julian, of Inglewod. What he doesn't know about it isn't worth knowing. Referring to Gloaming's wonderful gallops at Itandviek, a Sydney scribe says: "Gloaming's seven furlongs in 1.25% sent some trainers home d'sjusted with their horses. A training track spin that gets within half a second of the Australian race record is something remarkable." Hector Gray will be riding at Wanganui on Thursday, and at Avondale on Saturday. On Monday and Tuesday, he will be at Otaki, and on Wednesday back at Avondale. Incidentally lie will do a bit of riding in trains! Ethiopian was sent out first favorite in the Memsle Stakes at Caulfleld, but could only finish, fourth. The winner turned up in Eurythmlc, who opened at 3's, and feU back in the betting until you could almost name your own price. j The glamour of the racecourse has proved (oo audi for A.if. Shear*!*, sew... and tlia
pormla* Palmerstonlan lias relinquished commercial pursuits for his old calling of training neddles. The field for the Wanganul Guineas will not be a strong one, and Humbug and Weldone read most dangerous, that is if Right and Left Is not brought up for the race. The "correct card" at Marton gave the breeding of Classification as by Gravitation, which is incorrect. The Marlon Handicap winner was sired by Elevation. Those who believe in dreams may be interested to hear that the-witter had a most vivid dream the other night, and saw a 'horse carrying a green jacket with white, h oops, vtlui a race. Whether tbis imeans Crucelle at Wanganul, or too much crayfish and stout for supper remains to be seen. There is much discussion over a statement :'n tills week's Press that Butler, the rider of Printeinps in the Waikanae Handicap at Awapuni, was cut about the face and arms by another whip-weilder in the race, but this scribe'saw nothing of the Incident, though following the race with a powerful pair of binoculars. What the writer does lenow, however, is ..that the person who penned that par left the course to catch the south mail train before the race was run 1 ! Heard on tho course: First lady punter: "Do you believe that the errors o( the parent are reflected in the child?" Second lady punter: "Not on your life I Anyway, 1 never follow Dad's tips on a racecourse. I back my own fancy I" Vespucci, who won his first race in Australia last week, was purchased in Sydney as a yearling for 350 gns. He is engaged in the i;iisebill Guineas to-day, and iiis runninj shouid shed some light on his prospects in the' A..T.C. Derby, to be run on Saturday next. Amongst the entrants for the A..T.C. spring meeting are Forward Lady, Vespucci, Dewdrop, Peroration, British Arch, Itiuenoy, Fingon, Finruark, Ardnarce, Tararu Jack, and Warsplte. It is to be hoped that Gloaming will be able to take his place In one or more of the w.f.a. events, as a meeting between the crack New Zealand-owned gelding and Richmond Main, Poltrel, Kennaquhair, Wolaroi, etc., would bo full of intercut. Amythas is not a great track performer, but he Is doing everything "on his ear" (as the saying goes) at Hleearton, and leaks (more forward in. condition than lie did In the spring of last year. The Eclipse Stakes at Wanganul appears to be at his mercy. Whether Amythas will be sent across to contest the Melbourne Cup .remains to be seen, but his spring form may be depended upon to prove the deciding factor. Amythas has 9.5 U the Cup, but with any sort of a decent run that Impost would not trouble him. The Taranaki Jockey Club's programme for the new season is a splendid testimonial to the- go-ahead policy that marks the progress of tho Club during recent years. The stakes offered show an increase of £2090 on those of last, season, and the Taranaki Cup, of 1000 sovs., and Flying Handicap, of 500 sovs., should attract great fields in frhe autumn, Large Increases have been made all round, and owners and trainers should be gratified at the splendid stakes offered. Whether the Taranaki Jockey Club will ever attract the best horses to the Christmas meeting is doubtful, strong counter attractions at Ellerslie and Awapuni having to be contended with. Still, the effort to populariso the gathering is a worthy one, and it Is to be hoped that it will bear fruit. Complaints continue to pour in about the parsimony exhibited by the Manawalu Hunt Club on the occasion of the recent rac« meeting held at Awapuni. On top of the exorbitant lawn charge (12s), owners and trainers were refused extra ladles' tickets, there was no band present, and only a tea and sandwich lunch was procurable on the course. It Is aboiit time Hunt Club's catered for tho comfort and convenience of their patrons, especially when big attendances and big fields are ohtained foJHrifling prizes in the way of stakes. The Martians appear to be the best stiyen In tho Dominion at present, and it is interesting to note that of the thirty-eight acceptors in the New Zealand Cup no less than nine are by the Martagon horse. They are: Vagabond, Snub, Royal Star, Johnny Walker. Warlike, Nightraidcr, Moutoa Ivanovn, Rebuff, and Esperance. Nobleman looked bright and well at Awapuni. and the racing there and at Wanganui should help to land him at the post for (he New Zealand Cup In fine fettle. lie was going well last year In tho same rncc when he broke a blood vessel, and, all goln; well, he will give this year's Cup a big shake with 7.9 in the saddle. It seems to be the fashion for country clubs,to race on city courses nowadiys. The Waverlcy meeting will be held at Wanganul on Labor Day, owing to the Waverley course being under repair. The Kawakawa. K.C., for the same reason applied to race at Ellerslie, but the request was turned down, I'csslbly the .uondale club will oblige li'ulr country cousins. When Dusk}- Knight came fourth in the Hunters' Hurdles at Aw,i>.ii.s\ he was the raid: outsider of thirteen runners. One of th'sc days a horse quoted at forlonn odds will bob up and win, and the fellow who never loses will calmly tell you that he didn't really know what to back, so put a pound on each runner In the fled. There are some wonderful linrs about, and not the least or them was 'he fellow who talked fight when a sceptic scoffed at his calm assertion that he "went Chinaman" on the last race at Awapuni, and collected over fifty quid for his fourteen quid. At time of writing, acceptances for Otakl are not available, but, if Printeinps goes to the post for the principal distance handicap, for which he was handicapped at 7.3, he should be a very hot favorite. Printeinps won tho Walkanae Handicap at Awapuni under 7.5, and won it at the right end, so there appears to be no reason why the son of Autumnus should not run out a full ten furlongs. After him, Classification reads best—that Is if spring form is any guide at all.
