DOMINION TOURNAMENT. YESTERDAY'S MATCHES SOME BRILLIANT PLAY. (By Wire.—Special Reporter.) i Hamilton, Last Night, Perfect weather prevailed for the New Zealand golf championship meeting, which Mas continued to-day. The sunny, windless conditions imade low scoring possible, rind some flue cards were returned. Tho game of the day was that between Kirkwood (Australia) and Clements (Palmerston North), in the professional match. Going out the 1 inter frequently outdrove the open champion, who was playing safe. Kirkwood, however, went out in ,1!), and returned in a brilliant X 4, finishing with a three. Douglas always had the lead frnin lies, who was 3 down and 4to plo.y. The latter got a lovely 3 at the 16th, but topping his drive at the 17th., spoiled his chance and finished the match. In the amateur championship, Morpeth put up a wonderful performance against Humphreys. He went out in 3~>, and won 7 lip ant] 0. His figures for twelve holes are: 3, 5, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4,. 3, 4, 5; total, 47. H. Crosse went out in 38, and was 3 up on J. Goss. , Holing in fours for the next four holes lie won comfortably. E. Hickson, playing excellent golf and putting marvellously, went out in 38. He holed a mashie shot at the fourtli for a three. He finished badly In 6, 5. and 6, but completed the round in SO, beating A. D. S. Duncan, 4 up and 3. Duncan was not so straight as usual, but Hickson nlayed for his win. H. B. Lusk was all out to beat Horlon. Lusk went out in 39, and was but at the 14th tho players were all square. Horton sent his tee shot out of bounds, and lost the hole. A par four won Lusk the 15th., and then lie lost the 10th by putting his second Into a dip *near the green. Ho played tho 17th perfectly in a correct four, and won 2 up and 1. Hickson h'ad a close game with 3. B. McEwan. They were all square coming home, but Hickson again reeled oft 3, 4, 4, 4, 3, 4, winning five holes and the game. Hickson meets Dr. Ross to-morrow afternoon, and Morpeth plays Lusk. Douglas and Kirkwood, in the professional match, had a battle royal. Douglas was defeated hy not accepting chances. He certainly was unlucky on tho greens, several putts hanging over the hole. He was laid three stymies, and the one at the 9th he pulled round his opponent's! ball and holfd out a superb stroke, which drew applause from the gallery. He mado some great drives and outdrove Kirkwood up and down the windJb y 20 yards at some holes. At the flnifi hole—the 17th.—Douglas drove straight past the end of the fairway into the rough, and reached the green with a mashie. The Australian had to lilt a full brassy to get three. The test match, Douglas and lies (New Zealand) v. Kirkwood and East (Australia), will be played to-morrow.
