U.S. PRESIDENCY.

IMPORTANCE OF MAINE ELECTIONS By Telegraph,—Press A?sn.— Copyright. New York, Sept. 14. The Stflte elections in Maine show that the Republican majority was approximately 40,000. The Republican leaders claim that Maine* repudiated the Wilsop administration and the League of Nations. Maine is the only State in the Union whose elections occur in September instead of in November, and it has become an axiom that the nation's vote always follows Maine's vote, although 1912 and 1016 were exceptions, the State voting Republican and the nation Democratic. The Republican leaders attach great importance to the Maine results, as it is said that the greater number of women (who voted for the first time) were Republican.—Ans.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
