FARMERS' CO-OP. ORGANISATION SOCIETY.

PROPOSED COASTAL EXPANSION. Messrs G. H. Buckeridge and J. •$. Connett, two directors of the Farmers' Co-operative Organisation Society, Ltd., visited Okato yesterday, and at the conclusion of the sale held by Newton King, Lt<L, addressed a meeting of farmers in connection with the proposal to establish saleyards for the Organisation at Okato. About 50 farmers attended the meeting, which was held in Mr. W. J. Gray's wool-ehed, and was presided over by Mr. J. Wooldridge. Mr. Buekeridge referred to the requisition that had been made by the Okato people some time ago for the establishment of saleyards in their district. He pointed out that the organisation had, ever since its establishment! made great expansion, and whereaß in most businesses the promoters were satisfied if they could turn over their capital four or sis times per year, the organisation turned over its capital 26 times. Demands'were being made in various districts fpr the organisation to establish branches, but though they were always anxious and willing to assist shareholders, they were not able to, owing to the big demands being made on their finances. Up to the present 3C7 shares had. been subscribed in the district of which Okato was the centre, out of the 1000 which they had laid down as being necessary before they could give effect to the wishes of the people there. It was, he said, in the interests of the people of the district to subscribe shares, because they would benefit by the increased competition, and he instanced the case of Inglewood, which had become, since the establishment of the farmers' yards there, a very important centre, and he was satisfied that similar results would follow at Okato. Mr. J. S. Connett, who stated that he had only recently been appointed to the i directorate, said fie was out to do what he could to give the Society a filip. He confidently looked forward to the day when New Plymouth would become the headquarters of the organisation, owing to its position as the port, and the distributing centre. At the conclusion, Mr. Buckeridge' answered numerous questions as to the working of the organisation. The speakers' were given a very at- j tentive hearing, leading to the belief ' that an active canvass will result in : the necessary number of shares being j taken up in the district. A considerable; ] number was subscribed at the meeting. During the meeting a settler brought forward the question of the appointment of a stock agent for the coastal district, and 'Mr. Buckeridge to recommend the board of directors to make such an appointment immediately.
