DOMINION NEWS.

A-DISPUTED CLAIM. By Telegraph.—Press Association 1 Wellington, Sept,. 11, A claim was recently made that the Shire Line built the first steamer special- ; ly constructed for the New Zealand refrigerated trade. This was the Ellerslie, which was launched in April, 1884. The New Zealand Shipping Company, however, points out that the Tongariro, the Aorangi, and the Ruapehu were specially built by it for this trade, and had been launched in 1883. The first-named was off the stocks eight monthß before the Elderslie. DOMESTIC SCIENCE TRAINING. Wellington, Sept. 11. In reply to the remarks made on Thursday at the conference of technical education representatives, Professor Boys Smith, head of the domestic science school at Otagff University, has pointed out that no provision exists for training teachers in any secondary schools, although the need for it has been urgently felt for some time, and has been stressed many times by the Hon. J. A. Hanan, the former Minister of Education. The University authorities feel that it is the duty of the Education Department, not of the University, to establish training colleges for teachers. It is generally recognised that students at the Otago Domestic Science School have been excellently treated so far as that science is concerned. The Otago Education Board, realising the needs of the Dominion, recently granted facilities to domestic science students to practice the teaching of cookery. ARMOUR'S LICENSE FAVORED. Dunedin, Sept. 11. The farmers' unions of South Otago passed a resolution favoring the granting of licenses to Armour and Co. and Vestey Bros, for one year and from vear to year to trade in frozen meat in j*ew Zealand. RELIEVING COAL SHORTAGE. Wellington, Sept. 11. Mr. Massey has received a cable from Mr. Hughes (Premier of Australia) stating that the Waipori and the Gambeta left on Thursday night for New Zealand with coal, the Saikau Maru and Ginju Maru were expected to sail yesterday, and the Harunsan Maru to-day.
