LEADER OF THE ANZACS.
GENERAL BIRDWOOD AT HOME. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 11, 5.5 p.m. London, Sept. 10. Mr. Andrew Fisher and Sir Jas. Allen, with their ladies and military notables, welcomed General Sir William and Lady Birdwood at St. Pancras station. Mr. Fisher provides General Birdwood with an office in Australia House pending his departure for India. General Birdwood declined an interview, explaining that he had not given an interview during the whole time he was in Australasia, and was unwilling to disturb that record. When shown a cabled summary of the defence scheme he said he was afraid comment by him might he considered gratuitous; he preferred to maintain reticence. The date of the General's departure for India is not settled. The Genera! and his wife are enthusiastically reminiscent of the time they spent in Aus-tralasia.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn-
