THE OIL INDUSTRY.
FOSTERING ENTERPRISE PROPOSED PROTECTIVE LEGISLATION. Officers of the Mines Department have in view certain proposals, which, it is understood, will be put before Parliament this session, with the idea of assisting persons who take up the prospecting of oilfields. Mr. Jas. Clarke (Mayor of New Plymouth), wio was in Wellington this week, accompanied by Mr. IKeith, on business in connection with the Taranaki Oil Wells Company (in liquidation), told' a Daily News reporter last night that the intention of the Department is to incorporate in a Bill, regulations concerning boring rights over oilfields, which will have the eii'ect of protecting any company undertaking pioneering work in this industry. Officers of the Mines Department, Messrs. Kimbell (Under-Secretary) and Bishop (Technical Adviser), had been the prime movers in this, and Mr. Clarke said that both Mr. Keith and himself had expressed to these officers hearty approval of the scheme, tending as it did to prevent some of the injustices which were encountered by oil prospectors at present. In ail, probability the legislation will be introduced this session.
