THE REARDON CASE.
NO SETTLEMENT BEACHED. At Wednesday's sitting of the Eltham Magistrate's Court, Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S-M., presiding, Mr. P. O'Dea reported that he had been unable to bring about a settlement in the Reardon case. Mrs. Reardon refused to return to her husband. He had done everythin;' possible, and had also requested Father Moore to assist, but without success. The Magistrate described this as most regrettable. Reardon had written a letter which he should never have penned, and in which he made horrible suggestions, but he had admitted that he was wrong and apologised, and was now prepared to take his wife back. He (the magistrate) could not see his way clear to make an order for maintenance as applied for on behalf of the wife. Mr. O'Dea asked for maintenance for the child, and also an order for guardianship. Mr. J. H. Sheat said Reardon had instructed him to offer 10s per week for the maintenance of the child, but was strongly opposed to any order for guardianship. In reply to questions by the Magistrate, Mr. O'Dea said the child was a boy, eighteen months of age. Also in reply to the Magistrate, Mr. Sheat said Reardon was a painter, and resided at Opunake. The Magistrate said he would make an order for the guardianship of the child by the mother, for the next eighteen months, and for 12s 6d per week maintenance. It was most unfortunate that the parties could not come to an agreement. The letter containing the names of the writers of the slanderous letter was returned to Reardon.—Argus.
