Another very succos'itul "ftdies night" was held by the Egrncnt Club last evening, when there was a large gathering of members and their lady friends. The proceedings took the form of a social, there being no set programme arranged, but a thoroughly enjoyable evening was spent by everyone present. | The Egmont Club orchestra uf ten players under the charge of Mr. V. Lester, provided a delightful programme of orchestral *music, while the members and visitors engaged in billiard playing, progressive' euchre tournaments, and other games. The ladies' prize for the progressive euchre tournament was won by Mrs. Jenkins, and the gentlemen's by Mr. Summerfield, the booby pries being won by Miss Sole and Mr, Newboldt. During the evening supper was handed round by the club members. Stratford is the home of rumors at present, most of them centering around the Mayoral difficulty, and the Borough Council in general. All kinds of trouble is predicted for the Borough Council, but quite possibly little will actually happen. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan has not received any advice from the Auditor-General, as to his disquali' Beation. For some time past attempts have been made to reviye the local horticultural society, which, passed out of existence when the war 4 commenced, but so far no success has been attained. Several years ago Stratford had a very strong society, and it should be quite possible to make a fresh start if the enthusiasts will come together and dissuss the matter. The Roll of Honor for the Matapu district, which was designed by Mr. E. Corlett and carved by Mr. E. D: Evans, Is at present on view. The design is a very striking one, depicting on ov," ?idc ft mounted officer, and on the other (ride an infantryman in action, while at the top, on a scroll, appear the words: "Matapu District Roll of Honor," and the dates 1914-1919, and on a scroll at the bottom the words "Their Duty Nobly Done." The design is carved in relief on oak, and is a fine piece of work. In the centre, a panel will be placed containing the names of 27 men who left the district. ; The monthly meeting of the Ngaere ] IV.C.T.U. was held at Mrs. Morrison's ;. on Tuesday.
