NEW ZEALAND MEAT.

PEEP BEHIND THE SCENES. A Palmerston resident has just received a letter from Home dated July 13, which gives some illuminating information on the position of the meat, market there and future prospects for New Zealand meat. An extract from the letter reads as follows: "The farmers got rather an unpleasant surprise last week when the meat was decontrolled. They had been keeping the market a bit short of fat stock, expecting a big rise of prices, and the butchers put the price $f beef up Gd per lb, but at the first idle there was no difference at all, or hardly any. When they saw how prices went, some farmers who iiad stock on the market took them back home again, and as the market seemed to be settled down to about control figures the butchers have halved the rise by reducing the price 3d per lb, Mutton still keeps scarce and dear, about 2s to 2s 3d per lb, so there is a good opening for New Zealand mutton, but somehow, owing to the bad stuff supplied during the war under the guise of being New Zealand mutton, while it was Falkland Island and Argentine, folk got soured, and it will take a time before the distaste for imported stuff, dies away and the market recovers. I think it will, depend a good deal on New Zealand and her agents here perfecting their business methods, which require a little more push. ,o.f course then it may be' different' 'in big towns where there are big sales.—Manawatu Times.
