SALE OF TIMBER.
A COMBINE SUGGESTED. ' CQNTHOL PROPOSED. (By Wirt.'—Parliamentary Beporter.) Wellington, Laßt Night. The all-round control of timber prices was mentioned in the House by Mr. J. A. Nash (Palmerston-North), who said there was a statement current that three or four people in a large way of business were controlling the sale of timber, and it was primarily for. the purpose of building for the Government. This was detrimental to the work of private builders. The sale of timber generally should be placed under the control of the Board of Trade. A premium was being placed on the sale of timber in large quantities—ln one case 7s per hundred feet above the ruling rate had been charged. The Prime Minister said he was sorry to hear there was a suggestion of a combine in the sale of timber. If anything of the kind Were going on, steps should be taken at once to put a stop to it and punish those responsible. He was quite sure the President of tie Board of Trade would give consideration to the suggestion that the Board BhTould control the sale of timber generally,
