A SCHOOL COMMITTEE'S PROTEST. By Teleffrapli.—Press Assoclatioa. ' Wellington, Sept. 7Tho Whakatane School Committee resolved to protest against the Legislature empowering medical inspectors to compel parents to provide treatment recommended. It was contended that . the law would be incomplete unless the cost ,of such treatment were defrayed by the State.' The proposal harshly penalised family men, many of whom were unable to pay the expenses of medical fees. It was also contended that the State which took youths compulsorlly during wartime, should not dodge the responsibility of raising them physically fit. DEATH IN POLICE CELL. Wanganui, Sept. 7. An old man who was arrested yesterdan on a charge of theft ,of garden tools, died suddenly in the l<tt>k-up this morning. His name is at present unknown. He had a large scar on his forehead and another on one cheek. He sold" the tools to a second-hand dealer undfcr the name of Albert Jones, of Kent Terrace.
