THE PARK EFFORT.
NET AMOUNT ABOUT £1473. TRIBUTE TO MRS. BURGESS. The net sum realised by the Pukckura Park effort recently made in New Plymouth is about £1473. Reporting to the Board last evening the secretary (Mr. P. E. Stainton) stated that the total amount raised was £1533 Os Od, while the expenses would be about £GO. In making reference to the campaign, Mr. Stainton remarked that although a great deal of hard work was involved there were many redeeming features. He made appreciative reference to the, work done by Mrs. Burgess, and said that to her the success was wholly due. The low figure at which the expenditure stood was a tribute to her efficient management. The chairman (Mr. W. A. Collis) said that not only the Board, but. the whole of New Plymouth, was under a deep debt of gratitude to Mrs. Burgess. The people of the town should know the enormous amount of work which she had done. He endorsed the secretary's remarks about the wljole-hearted efforts made by Mrs. feurgess. He felt sure that her help would be forthcoming in any future movement for the welfare of the town. Mrs. Burgess said she felt she could hardly undertake any other ttisks of the, magnitude such as the recent one had proved. When the effort was commenced she had no idea that £ISOO would be reached. From the £7OO mark to the' £IOOO it was hard Work, for there were no donations andt it all had to be. made in shillings. The speaker remarked that she cotild not have accomplished what had been achieved without the support of the townspeople. She had not realised that the citizens had such a real love of the park, but when the need was put before them they responded. Mrs, Burgess stated that during the whole of her undertakings she never had the help of a secretary of the ability of Mr. Stainton and to him she expressed personal thanks. It was resolved: "That the Board desires to place on record its great appreciation of the action of Mrs. Burgess in initiating the campaign for raising money for the use of the Board, and their gratification that her efforts have been so highly successful. The handsome sum of £1533 which has/ been raised is a surprising proof of, the success of efforts designed with good judgment and carried out with enthusiasm during months of unremitting toil. "The Board also desires to thank its secretary, Mr. Stainton, for the energy and resourcefulness which he has displayed throughout the campaign as Mrs Burgess' first lieutenant. The Board cannot let the occasion pass without thanking also the members of Mrs. Burgess' committees and all societies and associations whose efforts contributed to the success of the campaign, and lastly tho Board thanks sincerely all those merchants and others outside New Plymouth who sent donations."
