' j THE RAILWAY LEASES. J j September 6. An important discussion took place at a combined nrteting of tlie Borough Council and the Chamber of Commerce to-night, on a proposal by Mr. R. Mas- , ters, M.P., that the Government be asked to tell the freehold of the railway leases on the eastern side of Broadway and in Juliet Street. It was decided to adopt Mr. Masters' suggestion, and to circulate a petition to jhis effect. » THE NEW POST OFFICE. j Mr. R. Masters, M.P., informed the j Borough Council to-night that, the plans [ of the new post office had been absolutely revised, and were now hnrdlv recognisable. The whole of the ' site originally suggested would be taken lip with the frontage of the new building, which would vxtend right up to On Kee's fruit shop. The site of On Kee's building, and rl-'o that of Mr. Harris' fish shoo. wa = to be kept for future extensions, ind in the meantime would be tired for a garage and workshop. He believed tint- a clock tower would be erected, and the townspeople would be asked to provide the clock. Mr. Masters added Hint he was convinced the postal officials intended providing for the future growth of .Stratford. GENERAL. Some time ago the Borough Council decided to give up the retail branch of the electrical department, on account of the shop not showing a sufficiently large return, and to-day the shop was closed, the electrical engineer moving to the rooms at the back of the public office, recently vacated by Mr. W. Power. The nnual examination of the pupils attending the local convent school was commenced this morning by Inspectors Demp<:ey and Valentine. Mr. M. I, Jury, of Stratford, who has been seriously ill, is now reported to have taken a turn for the better. The Rev. Father Maples was operated on thi,g morning, and is reported to be doing as well as can be expected. The legal offices in Stratford have decided to observe Saturday as the weekly half-holiday, instead of Thursday, the change taking effect from Saturday next. The Rev. A. T. Thompson, New Zealand agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society, who is at present, in Stratford, will give an address on the World-wide work 1 of the Bible Society, in f the Parish IJall. to-morrow (Tuesday) evening at 7.M0 o'clock. Me??r-i Smart Kros., whose new shop in Broadway North is.nearing completion, have divided to go in thoroughly for electric:) i work, and at present have in stock all electrical accessories. The Pembroke lioad School was packed on Thursday night, when Mrs. OntliIjert, (chairwoman) presented, on behalf of the residents of the district, to Miss Rogers a silver cream jug and siurariasin, and to Miss Martin a silver cake, stand, in recognition of these ladies' services in supplying' music, for their dances free of charge during the war. Mr. sr. Rogers suitably responded on behalf of the recipients. During the evening musical items were given by Misses E. McCraeken. Rogers, and Martin, and Messrs. Rogers and Higgett. Mr. Jans niiiile an efficient .M.C. Mr. Myrcs was doorkeeper. Mrs Bianchi kindly supplied extra music. .It is understood that the work of ireeting the new garage for Mr. John Davis (F.gmnnt Garage) in front of the present building in Broadway North, will be commenced as soon as supplies of cement are available. There seems i.o doubt tint Stratford is going to extend north rather than south, and other firms are believed to be contemplating the erection of new premises in this portion of the town. Two of the Nonconformist ministers in Stratford have been provided with motor ears by their congregations, in order to enable them to visit all portions of the district in comfort and without undue delays.
