DETAILS OF SINKING, By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyrljht. x Washington, Sept. 4. The Navy Department has received an interesting account of the accident to the submarine S5. The submarine made a dive in 165 feet of water, and a large valve of an air tank failed to ckikc, admitting a large quantity of ivater into the living spaces, and the Coat went to the bottom. The crew closed the valve and expelled the water. Tli's caused the bow to be liftel above waier, the stern remaining on the bottom. The storage batteries gave out fumes and the crew retreated to the bow section and began to drill a hole in the side. Tlie air was very foul. The steamship Atlantic 25 hours later saw the bow and a shirt waving through a small hole into it. The A'■.amis pumped air into the submarine and sent a wireless message to another steamship. She then stood by and her engineers worked eight hours with, a hand tool before they- finished cutting a hole large enough to release the crew, who were suffering from the effects o£ the bad air-—Aus.-N.Z.
