In the Federal House of Representatives, Mr. Hughes, replying to a question, explained that the British Government disapproved of wool-scouring in Australia, as it sold badly as compared with greasy. He disagreed with the (British Government's attitude, and convened a, meeting of wool interests with the object of encouraging the industry locally. The Illawarra coal miners passed a resolution repudiating the coal tribunal at present sitting in Sydney, and urging its representative to .withdraw. A conference of railway authorities at Melbourne decided to proceed immediately with a third-rail experiment at Tocumal. The third rail will be extended to Victoria. A luvttry tax, based on the Canadian tax, is foreshadowed by the Commonwealth in lieu of additional land and income tax. telegraph rates may be increased and possibly postal rates also. The* Federal Government has acquired timber and sawmilling interests for war service and home purposes for an amount approaching' £500,(XIO. Returned soldiers have petitioned that land be unlocked in the Murchison district. They state that 23,000,000 acres are held by 30 pastoralists—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. Sydney, Sept. 4. The Advertising Conference adopted a Federal constitutional title, being the Advertising Association of Australia and New Zealand. . Mr. W. A. Holman, the former Premier" of New South Wales, was entertained at luncheon by old friends and presented with a cheque of some thousands of pounds. In the House of Arbitration Bill was read a third time. Mr. Cook announced the appointment of a Royal Commission to report upon the incidence of taxation, particularly equitable distribution of taxation and harmony between the Commonwealth and the States, also recognition of losses by farmers. Mr! Hughes explained that the shipping combine refused to pay rebates to the Victorian Government because the | latter patronised the Commonwealth | Line.
