COST OF LIVING.

ANOTHER FIVE PER CENT. INCREASE. In the House of Representatives on Friday, Mr. J. McCoinbs (Lyttelton) called the attention of the Prime Minister to tiie fact that, as shown by the "Monthly Abstract of Statistics," tile cost of living hud, during the past month risen 49 points. That, he said, meant 49-50ths. of a shilling, or practically ft ? per cent, increase in one month. Would the Prime Minister, he asked, in view of this alarming rate of increase, favorably consider the setting up this session of a special committee to go into the question and make recommendations to tho Government for dealing with th» problem, which has not been dealt with hitherto? Mr. Massey. I propose to set tip a committee next week to deal.with the butter question, and have no objection to the committee going (further in the same direction—a Parliamentary committee, of course.
