Messrs. W. D. Powdrell, 0. Hawken, R. Masters, and W. T. Jennings, M.P.'s, arrived in Taranaki by the mail train on Saturday night.. Mr. J. J. Patterson, of Manaia, whilst cranking his car, had the misfortune to break his arm, and is now in a hospital in Hawera. A London cablegram states that New Zealand and' Australian journalists gave a . farewell luncheon to Sir. T, Mackenzie. The Hon. A. M. Myers was present. A Press Association message from Wellington states that news has been received of the death in London of Mr. Edward Noel Bairaud, one. of the founders of Barraud and Abraham, Ltd., Palmerston North. He was a prominent water-color artist. His age was 03. Death was caused by heart trouble. News .has just been received that Lieutenant A. H. Sutherland, of the 21st Lancers, died on Saturday week at Delhi, India, from enteric fever. He was the only son of Major T. and Mrs. Sutherland, of Manaia, and after attending the local State school, became a pupil at the New Plymouth High School, where he was prominent in athletics Later ho took a military course at the Duntvoon Military College in Australia, and on graduating joined the 21st Lancers in India. The death occurred at the New Plymouth hospital yesterday, after a short illness, of Mr. Percy Lealand, a well known New Plymouth business man. Mr. Lealand, who was 48 years of age, was born at Nelson, and was educated at Coromandel. About 2tl years ago he removed to Taranaki, residing at Pungareliu for about four years. He started business in Devon Street, in 1893, and, continued there until his death. He is survived by his widow (nee Miss Hale), and two sons and two daughters.

The funeral of the late Mr. William H. Griffiths, of Fitzroy, took place yesterday, at the Tc Henui Cemetery. There was a large cortege, including the Citizens' Band and members of most of the Taranaki iflre brigades, [who assembled to pay their last respects to a past president of the Association. There wore eighty-eight present— Hawera, Manaia, Kaponga, Elthani, Stratford, Inglewood and Waitara being represented, in addition to tho New Plymouth and Fitzroy brigades. The pallbearers were members of the Fitzroy Brigade, of which Mr. Griffiths was Captain, The Rev. Martin officiated at the graveside.
