SOUTII AFRICAN WAR VETERANS. September 3. The animal meeting of the Stratford branch of the South African War Veterans' Association was held last night, Captain J. \V. McMillan presiding over a satisfactory attendance. ■ The chairman, in moving the adoption of the balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of £4 7s fid, congratulated the members on the satisfactory , position of the. Association. It was gratifying to remember that as a result of the secretary's efforts branches of the Association had been formed at New Plymouth and elsewhere, and some enjoyable reunions had been held. The motion was seconded by Mr. J. Bullir and carried. The office-bearers for last year were re-appointed, and the annual subscription was fixed at ss. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. T. Richardson, it was resolved that it would be advisable to form a Taranaki Association, and Messrs J. W. McMillan and T. Lawson were appointed delegates to attend a canference to discuss the proposal. It was decided that the recommendation that the question of members joining the R.S.A. be left to individual members to decide, be agreed to. Votes of thanks were passed to the honorary secretary (Mr. T. Lawson), to the Press, and to the chairman. GUN CLUB SHOOT. The Stratford Gun Club held a very successful shoot at Eltham yesterday. The weather conditions were fine, and there was keen competition for the various events. Following are tTie results of the various shoots: No. I (12 birds). —F. Casey (15 yards), 11 birds, 1; H. Harrison (18 yards), 10 birds, 2; A. Nelson (17 yards), R. .1. Knuckey (14 yards), and P. Jenkins (14 yards), 9 birds, 3. Thirteen competed. No. 2 (same conditions). —F. I. Tuke (15 yards), 11 birds, 1; B. Green (15 yards), 10 birds, 2; 11. Harrison (19 yards), A. Nelson (17 yards), W. O'Brien (14 yards), and F. Casey (17 yards), 3. Twelve competed. No. 3 (same conditions).-S. D. Coleman (17 yards), 11 birds, 1; W. O'Brien (14 yards), 2; B. Green (15 yards), 9 birds, 3. Twelve competed. No. 4 (nine birds).—S. D. Coleman (19 yards) and P. Vincent (10' yards), 8 birds each, divided first and second money; B. Green (15 yards) and P. Jenkins (14 yards), 7 birds, tied for third money. Twelve competed. First Miss Out.—B. Green (15 yards) won on the eighth round from F. I. Tuke (17 yards) out of eleven competitors. A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. The executive of the Stratford A. and P. Association met last night, when the i work of revising the schedule was completed. It was decided to award a gold medal for the best working collie. The home industries section was gone through thoroughly and a considerable number of new classes were inserted, including new classes for honey. A special feature is to be made of children's exhibits, and these classes have been extended. It was also decided to award championship prizes for Jersey cattle. BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held this afternoon to consider the appointment of an engineer in succession to Mr. C. E. Evans, who is resigning to go to Masterton. The Council unanimously decided to offer the position to Mr. E. Taylor, C.E., at present with the Lands Department at Auckland and formerly with the Wellington City Council. Mr. Taylor was present in Stratford to-day, and notified his acceptance of the position. At the time Mr. Evans was engaged, Mr. Taylor was the second choice of the Council. GENERAL. Mr. On Kee, holder of the railway lease of the section next to the vacant section in Broadway, has received notice that his lease will not be renewed after March 31 next. This is taken to mean that the section will be required for the new post office. The lease in question affects Mr. On Kce's fruit shop and Mr. W. Harris' Mi shop. A plain and fancy dress dance in aid of $e school funds vsill be held in the Cardiff schoolroom on September 8, when trophies will be awarded for the best lady's and gentleman's fancy dresses. At the Stratford Roman Catholic Church on Sunday, the Rev. Dean McKenna, of New Plymouth, will celebrate Mass at 8 o'clock. There will be no other service that day. Latest reports regarding the condition of the Rev. Father Maples indicate that he is still seriously ill. An operation will be performed on the reverend gentleman on Monday next. Mr. Tennant, the honorary organiser for the Dominion Boy Scouts, paid a visit to the local troop last night and addressed the bovs on the aims and objects of the movement. Designs for war memorials forwarded by the Government are at present on view at the Municipal Buildings in Broadway, Ladies! Call and inspect the splendid display of new leather bags at H. J.
