MAYOR'S APOLOGY.
FOR DEFAMING COAL DEALERS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, August 31. In March last the Mayor of Petone (Mr. M. Ewan) was one of a deputation to toe Prime Minister on the question of the coal shortage and distribution at Petone. In the course of his remarks he was repotted as saying that "dealers in Petone were in the habit of delivering only 1001b as a cwt.,. and he had some evidence that the weight was sometimes much shorter than that." Some of the dealers brought an action for recovery of £2OO damages for alleged defamatory statement, When the case was called on in the Magistrate's Court to-day, counsel for thepl&intiff asked that the case should be withdrawn as the defendant had tendered an apology and paid legal expenses.
