The Commodities Commission has increased the retail 'price of butter by 3Jd a lb., and cheese has been increased to Is 7d a lb. An interim report of the Broken Hill Strike Tribunal has been received by the Solicitor-General. It will not be made public, but it is understood it favors a forty-four hours week. Melbourne, August 31. The Watersiders' decided to abolish overtime throughout Australia, tho reason given being that many wharf laborers are unable to earn a reasonable living under present conditions. Mr. Millen has announced that to date applications for war service homes total 12,060, involving an expenditure of £7,196,049. Parer and Mcintosh flew from Point Cook to Flemington, where they were, officially welcomed by Mr. Hughes in the presence of 15,000 people. Hobart, August 31. Live stock statistics for 1919-20 show a decrease of 3792 cattle and 60,499 sheep compared with the previous year. Brisbane, Aug. 31. The superintendent of the sugar experiment stations states that, owing to the late drought, the sugar produced in Australia will be 100,000 tons short of requirements, and importations to that extent will 1 be liecessary. Contrary to expectations Parer and M'lntosb arrived at Melbourne in a Defence Department biplane and spent a quiet evening at Parer's home. The Advertising Men's Congress decided to ask the Federal Government to erect at the Federal capital a memorial as a recognition of the advertisement which their flight gave Australia throughout the world. Mr G. Beckett (a New Zealander) was elected one of the vice-presidents of the association. Sydney, Aug. 30. A meeting of union officials by 74 votes to 23 pledged itself to endeavour to change the personnel of the present Labour Council. This is a counter-blast organised by the Australian Labour Party against the recent decision of the Labour Council in favour of goslow and irritation strikeß.—Aus.-N.55. Cable Assn.
