MANAWATU TOURNAMENT. K,EW PLYMOUTH MEN QUALIFY. (By Wire.—Special to News.) Palmerston North, Last Night. Tho Manawatu Golf Club's tournament opened to-day, and was favored with fine weather. Some- 100 competitors took part. Unfortunately the heavy rain on Monday made the' course in parts very heavy, and the uneven state of the greens no doubt accounted for the poor cards returned. Cross, the New Zealand champion, returned the best card, 78 and 81. Some of the top men made a poor showing. D. H. Butcher, J. S. Paton, and G. M. Chong, of New Plymouth, qualified with a score of 179, 187, and 189 respectively. Wanganul won the teams' match with a score of 343, and Manawatu was second with 349. A VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. The final of the ladies' junior championship of the New Plymouth Club was decided yesterday afternoon, when Miss Bremer beat Miss Foote, 5 up and 4. The ladles played a bogey jnatcli yesterday for a prize donated by Mrs. McQuade, and it was won by Miss Stanford. The best scores were: Miss Stanford (14), 4 down; Miss Gavin (11), 5 down; Miss Rollo (16), G down; Miss Ruudle (10), 7 down; Miss Gilbert (16), 7 down. PLAY AT HAWERA. At the Hawera links on Satutday afternoon Miss Burgess defeated Mrs. French in the semi-final for the ladies' golf championship, and the final between Mrs. McLean and Miss Burgess was played on Monday afternoon, under perfect weather conditions, Mrs. McLean winning by sup and 4to play. The golf throughout was excellent and weil worthy of a championship final. Mrs Mac Lean's score for the 18 hole 3 was 92, and her card read: 5, 4, 6, 4, 5, 7, 4, 5, 6—46; 4, 4, 7, 4, 4, 7, 4, 7, 5—46. Miss Burgess' card was: 6, 4, 5, 4, 5, 8, 6, 7, 7—52; 7, 5, 6, i, 4 (unfinished).—Star.
