BOROUGH COUNCIL.
GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTER. The New Plymouth Borough Council mot last evening. Present: His' Worship the Mayor (Mr. .las. Clarke), Crs. llnydcn, Griffiths, Hill, Sykes, Short, Parkin, Brooker, and Collis. HARBOR BOARD LAND. The Now Plymouth Harbor Board wrote with reference to the proposal to have the Board's land at Fitzray merged into the borough, stating that the matter being muler 'discussion between the two bodies at the present t'tne the Board was surprised at the action of the Council in bringing tha matter forward in its present fo-m. The Board would object- to proceeding'!, but would be prepared to discuss the question. at a later stage. The Mayor said there seemed io be come misunderstanding about the position". The matter was referred to the subcommittee working in conjunction with the Harbor Board. LORN A AND CALVERT STREETS. On the recommendation of the Works Committee, it was decided that the Department of Labor be informed that the estimated' 1, cost of the work in Voale's Estate a3ked for is as follows, and that in view of the heavy cost entailed, the Council cannot see its way to undertake any of the works enumerated: Forming and metalling Lorna Street and part Calvert Street, £7OO to £800; water mains, £ISOO to £1SOO; electric light, £295. FORMATION OF POWER BOARDS The secretary of the .Eltham HydroElectric Committee wrote notifying that it was proposed to call a meeting of the committee at an early date and asking when Mr. Bartley electrical engineer, would visit Eltham. He understood the Council was agitating in tile direction of bringing pressure to bear upon' the Government for the erection of transmission lines to, if not beyond, Eltham. In order that each district would be in a position to assist the Council, the earlier separate Boards wero constituted the greater tha prospect of success. The letter was left in the engineer's hands. MOTUROA PRISON RESERVE. Mr. Smith, M.P., forwarded a copy of a letter from the Minister of Lands in regard to Moturoa Prison Reserve, intimating that areas had been surveyed for a school site and recreation grounds, and would be permanently reserved, and control of the recreation ground would be subsequently placed under a board of local residents. GENERAL. Cr. Hayden was appointed tlio Council's representative on the Tramway Appeal Board. The preparation of plana, specifications, and estimates of the cottages to be erected in McLean and Beach Streets was decided upon. The report of the Carnegie Institute Committee stated that a deputation in--troduced by Mr. C. F. Rundie interviewed the committee on the question of providing a room in which to play draughts, and it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the ehair-
