A NEW COMPANY.
WHITE'S, LIMITED, Still another old Taranaki firm ha* be* come incorporated. Yesterday Messrs. S, B. White and Sons was registered as White's, Limited, a private company under the Companies Act. The commencement of the ta*i< 'ness dates back to 1888, when the late Mr. S. B. White j»ur« chased a small general store at the corner of Courtenay and Eliot streets, at thai time a busy suburban centre.' The business grew steadily, and in 1896 Mr. White secured the corner in Devon Street, now Messrs. Sole Bros' butchery, and opened a drapery business. Later, he was joined by bis sons, and Mr. W. Hughes', better known to old Taranakians as Foote's, business was for* chased, and at about the same time 4 portion of the premises now occupied by the firm, was secured. From time to time various improvements and exten* sions have been effected. In 191t ft. further addition of twenty feet to the frontage was made when the property of Mr. A. E. Sykes was secured And turned into a men's and boys' clotttilig department, and again in December of last year an art needlework business adjoining was purchased. The new company will hare as governing director Mr. Percy White, who has had the management of the old linn foe some years. Associated with him on the directorate are some members of the staff, and the policy of the new concern will doubtless be as enterprising' a» in past years. Before the advent of the motor ear, and when farmers over twenty arlles from town were in a measure isolated, the firm were represented in the conutry districts by travellers, and in most parte of Taranaki, and even beyond, "White's" is a household word.
