With the return of Mr. Bryant, late director of soldiers' settlements, who was recalled from London, a Royal Commission has commenced an enquiry into the administration under Mr. Bryant. The evidence so far taken indicates alleged maladministration of funds under a certain bonus system, and in other 'directions. t One witness gave evidence that acting under Mr. Bryant's instructions, he supervised repairs to the residence of Mr. Ash'ford, then Minister of Lands, of which department 'the soldiers' settlements is a branch.
