BOXING.

NEW PLYMOUTH TOURNAMENTRICHARDSON DEFEATS BROWN, The Empire Theatre was well filled last night on the occasion of the third boxing tournament to be held during the last few weeks by the recently-formed Taranaki Boxing Association. The principal attraction was the fifteenround professional contest for a purso of 70 bovs. between George Richardson, who has won numerous contests, and Frank Brown, welter champion of the 4th Battle Squadron Grand Fleet, 1915. Both men have improved since they met T. Thompson, who gained the verdict over each, and a keenly contested bout was provided. The display proved a very interesting one, the audience showing Its appreciation iu no uncertain manner. The contestants were evenly matched. Brown having the better of the, earlier stages, but he docs not possess - the punch of his opponent, and when slightly Ahead on points In the thirteenth round, was sent to the boards on three or four occasions, and the referee awarded the decision to Richardson, who had boxed in a very determined fashion throughout.

.The amateurs, who* provided the preliminary bouts, also gave very attractive displays. The r<rrange*metits for c the tournament reflected great crecwt on the officials concerned, comprising Messrs. AMATEUR BOtfTS. The amatrur contests were all six rounds of two minutes each. In the bantam contest, J. .Tames (New Plymouth) proved too good for YVally Harris' (New Plymouth), whom ho Imockod out in the second round. Special interest was attached to the lightweight contest betweon G. Thomas (Wancanul) 9.7, and l'aton (Hawera), 9.0. Thomas, who lmd the advantage in weight and reach, proved too Rood for his opponent, who put UP a defence, and showed considerable science, but was compelled to .take the count In the fifth round.

Owing to L. McAsey, of Lepperton, being Unable to take the ring on ■ account of an Injured hand, the heavy-weight contest with Smith did not tako place. A special contest was put on, in which W. Coombes (Oaonui), 8.12, was matched against A. Heuderson (New Plymouth), 9.2. The unorthodox methods adopted by Coombes delighted the qudience, and appeared to considerably nonplus his opponent.
