UNIVERSITY MATCH. SYDNEY DEFEATS VICTORIA COLLEGE. Bj Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, ; last Night. A team of Rugby footballers from Sydney Unversity played the opening match of their tour hero to-day, when, they met and defeated Victoria College hy 20 points to 18. From the start to the finish the play was of a very fast, but ragged order—weak in point of combined work, but noteworthy for some brilliant individual efforts. The game was very evenly contested, but it was marred In a certain degree by a very loose Interpretation of tne off-side rule on the part of the Australians. The visitors played with great dash. Their formation differed materially from that of the home team, in that they played four three-quarters and two halves, but no fiveeighths They also eschewed the wingforward. This last omission seemed to tell against them. Their main weakness lay in the fact that they concentrated all their forces on attack, and neglected defence The Wellington team's first two tries were both scored through their opponents' outposts being left under-manned. Nevertheless, the Australian's' effort were occasionally very spectacular, particularly when their three quarter line got busy. For the visitors, Farquhar scored two tries, and Goldsmith, Raymond, Flynn, and Morgan om each. Lawton converted one. For Victoria College, Nicol, Aitken, and L. Smith each got tries, all • being converted by R. Scott, who also kicked a penalty goal.

THE MOASCAR CUP. PALMERSTON NORTH BEAT TE AUTE. Napier, Last Night. A Moascar Cup match, Palmerston North v. Te Aute, was played here to-day, and was won by Palmerston North by eight points to five. Owing to a strong wind blowing down the leld the game was played in fouc, -twentyninutes spells. Te Aute scored Ave points in the first spell, a try by Paena, converted oy Pine. Palmerston scored eight points in "he second spell, tries by Soilett and Hodder, the latter converting his own. In the third and fourth spells, the play was mainly 'n favor of Te Aute, but fine tackling by Palmerston prevented any score. INTER-COLLEGIATE, TOURNAMENT. Christchurch, Last Night. In the inter-Collegiate football tournament, Wellington and Wanganui Colleges drew today, eight points each' It was an evenly fought match, in which there was little outstanding play. Play was largely confined to the forwards, the backs of both colleges giving an Indifferent display. / THAMES BEAT SOUTH ISLAND COUNTRY TEAM. Thames, Last Night. Notwithstanding steady rain about 1500 spectators witnessed the South Island v. Combined Thames and Goldfleld mutch at Parawnl, and despite a greasy ball and a slippery ground the game was very fast. At half-time the score was: Thames 6, South Island 4. Thames set the pace in the second spell, putting on another eleven points to their opponents' five. Tho conditions made hack play practically impossible, and "soccer" (actios were the order of the day. OTAGO BEAT SOUTHLAND. Invercargill, Last Night. A representative Rugby match, Otago v. Southland, was played here to-day, and resulted in a win for the visiting team by 11 points to 9.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP. STRATFORD DEFEATS INGLEWOOD. In the play-off for the Primary School Busby football championship, the Inglewood team met Stratford at Victoria Park, Stratford, yesterday morning, the home team winning by 17 points to nil, and retaining the Shield. Stratford had the heavier team and were superior in both back and forward divisions, and soma interesting play was witnessed. "The Inglewood tean, however, could not with stand the rushes of their heavier opponents, and though in the second half they playtd with more vigor, they did not succeed in breaking through the defence. Shortly after play was commenced, Bonner scored. Connell and Carryer also scored ikies, and In addition to converting the latter's try, B. Collins kicked two fine goal. Mr. G, Collins controlled the gaime. * SCHOOL MATCH POSTPONED. The Primary Schools match, which was to have been played as a curtain-raiser to the Graminar-N P. High Scjiool match on Saturday, has been postponed owing to the big match being off.
